It is always tricky in the heat when you are a “layerer” like me, to construct your look in a way that allows you to remain cool and not be overdressed. So for me this summer that has meant really embracing sheers and sometimes wearing lighter pastels. I confess I like it and have been feeling rather feminine and soft as a result. I have even been flirting with some prints, plunging necklines and colors and have been keeping a much more open mind when browsing through the summer sales. I find almost like a robot I am programmed to seek out the black and white items on the rack. It is almost like the automatic pilot that takes me back and forth to work. It happens without thinking. Now I need to challenge myself, become more self-aware and expand my range. Let’s see what I can pull of while remaining true to my “brand”.
Accidental Icon Wears:
Lavender/grey skirt: Ann Demeulemeester, White sleeveless sheer and mesh tunic: BLK Denim, Sheer off-white cardigan: Yohji Yamamoto, Off-white shoes: Yohji Yamamoto, Sunglasses: Prada
What are your summer layering tricks?
loose silhouettes and washable fabrics.

Natural fabrics, garments with flow and movement.
I’m not much of a long skirt wearer anymore – but they are much more comfortable in the summertime.
I find washed linen tunics to be the coolest tops I can find. I have a pretty good collection and wear them over maxi skirts and jeans.
No layering this summer! Too hot and I want to play with my kids. So I salute my large tshirt! Follow the kiss rulz!

This isn’t a layering tip but more a muse about how fashion can make us feel. I believe an outfit can push us out into the world and be the catalyst to get things done. A change of clothes (like your layers, light colors, soft fabrics) can bring us inward to our feminine, creative selves. It seems you’re having a creative summer, doing some inside work which will lead to your new "outside" work. Like Alexa Chung’s stepping stones. Pushing out, drawing in.
I agree with your thoughts Brenda. One of the reasons why keeping any clothes for ‘best’ is a good plan. Not suggesting one should wear a ball gown to work – supposing you had one – but rather that you should have garments that you enjoy wearing, that make you feel the best you you can be, and wear them often.

I so agree with you because I instinctively reach for black when shopping and have had to really pay attention to this. Love how you call this being on automatic pilot. To this extent, I’ve become more aware and when shopping say do I really need another black top or pants. I love your writing style and enjoy reading your posts!

Hi, thanks for the comments on stepping stones, it got me thinking. In regards to your post above, I’m wondering if you can – at some stage – please share some of your thoughts on ‘branding’. Are you ever tempted to lash out and wear something totally outside of your normal range – eg at home on sundays?
I’m trying to make some sort of ‘capsule’ in my own wardrobe, and the adage that ‘less is more’ seems to be working at the moment, although I’m finding it difficult to part with some of the outliers. Thanks for any thoughts you may care to share.

I will freely admit that when it comes to humidity and heat I leave all ideas of layering behind.
This look is very ethereal.

I’m a fan of layering too, and we have been having a very hot summer, which means if I’m going to layer, the fabrics have to be very lightweight. It feels strange to wear just one layer of clothing!

oh forgot to add, I love winter due to layering opportunities. In summer I use lightweight vests, singlet tops, beads to add this effect
