It is very rare that I find a skin care product, or any product for the matter, that produces an observable outcome and that has an origin and purpose that makes me feel passionate and inspired.
I was recently introduced to a brilliant and very humble professor, Dr. Augustinus Bader. His research and practice began with exploring the challenges around organ transplants which led him to stem cell research. He became passionate about finding alternative treatments for burn victims and others who experienced physical scarring and after effects from war, torture, domestic violence and other traumatic events. Dr. Bader was interested in finding out how to re-establish the natural activation process for cells to re-generate and heal when compromised by injury.
Known as the ABC Method, Dr. Bader developed a topical treatment that activated, boosted and committed (three process that must occur simultaneously for healing to occur) the body’s stem cells to follow its own natural healing process. After great success with small clinical trials, including with children who had suffered severe burns, he was determined to continue his important work despite the fact that large pharmaceutical companies do not like to fund trials that do not involve huge segments of the population. For those of you research wonks, his samples were too small to be profitable for the companies. Also many of the trauma survivors he was encountering did not have the funds to pay for treatment.
That being said, Dr. Bader persevered and after meeting his partner, someone who understands business and finance, the idea was born to take the medical grade treatment and turn it into a beauty product that harnesses the genius of our own bodies with the contingency that a foundation would be formed where a percentage of the profits would be available for Dr. Bader to continue to innovate and provide free treatment to those who needed it. So of course for those of you who are aware of my long history working with those who have experienced traumatic events, you can probably tell I was sold just on that story alone.
You all know I am the biggest cynic when it comes to skincare promises. First, I have experienced much sun damage and pollution exposure, which has showed on my face. Challenging life events that created periods of high stress also showed on my skin. I have been unashamed to present this in all of my photos. After many disappointments, I decided to just stick to cleansing and moisturizing. However, I honestly have to tell you that after just two weeks of using this product there is a demonstrable difference in the look of my skin (it is luminous), the sagging parts under my eyes are filling out and lifting and the deep carves from the challenges are becoming lighter. Full disclosure: I received the product to try but have not been paid to promote it.
The best part of all is that this is me and my body collaborating on this beauty project and activating its own brilliant mechanisms. There are no promises to take away all of the wrinkles and the life story told on my face (I would not want it to!) but this product restores your skin to the best possible state of health it can can be. Full disclosure again, it is expensive, but for me I can justify it in that I am also making a charitable contribution and not just indulging vanity about my looks. By the way, I also see visible outcomes. It is not available yet but soon will be at Augustinus Bader.
As a woman who is committed to the enhancement of human well-being, really our topic for the month, what is so compelling for me about this cream is that every time I apply it to my face, I am not only helping myself to be the best I can be, I am also helping countless trauma victims whose healing treatment will be funded and innovated as part of the mission of this brand. Using this product allows me to authentically represent every part of who I am at this time of my life.
What products do you use that make you feel authentic and natural?
Incredible story! Also sounds like there’s some actual science behind it rather than hype. Like you I’m a bit of a cynic with skincare products, not that I don’t use them, I just hate all the totally outrageous claims. Thanks for the tip.
Sunscreen and hat to shield my face from the sun; keep my skin (face, neck, hands) moist with creams or oils …. first defense actions / daily routines. I apply sunscreen even when it is cloudy…ok, even when it is rainy. Night – a retina-based product along with my creams or oils. Unfortunately, I have found that expensive products work better / provide the results than drug-store purchases…switch products from time to time…. avoid smashing my face into a pillow…(via Laura Hutton / ha!)
Using moisturizer and eye creme 24/7 since my 20s. Sunscreen, too. People cannot believe that I am 70 as I have no wrinkles. No smoking, an occasional glass of wine and living in the Pacific Northwest with all the moisture helps, too.
I’m 52 about to turn 53, and am often told I look a lot younger than I am (I don’t always see it, but others do. Not trying to toot my own horn here ;-)). My thing is all natural. I use all natural formulas from the inexpensive natural food store lines to the more expensive spa-like formulas. I have a company that works with a number of all natural skincare and cosmetic lines, so I’ve been exposed to many in the course of doing business. I also eat a primarily plant based diet (more Redueetarian, rather than vegan).
I limit my sun exposure. I think now my biggest issues are sag, rather than wrinkles. Genetics dictate a lot of that. Not smoking and not drinking much at all, also helps skin stay a bit more youthful.
I am 73 and I have no wrinkles on my face. I do have some brown age spots, which I would like to erase; however, Using a makeup primer under my foundation covers them up. My mother instilled in me that it matters not if you wear makeup, but skin care and moisture gets are critical. I have used Jafra skin care products for Forty five years! Their products are not advertised and are sold only by consultants. I am not trying to do a commercial for them, but only point out how important that you use quality skin care products and take care of your skin from a young age. It is easier to prevent skin problems and wrinkles than to try to get rid of them later on.
Egyptian Magic. Amazing product. I wouldn’t be without it.
I love the line Jade Lilly. It is ethically made and feels like a luxurious spa treatment at home.
I identify with you in many ways! My hair looks very similar – recently embraced my natural locks and I am 68. I also have sun worshipped skin (having lived in TX, FL & HI) and have been trying to undo the damage since my 30s. I was going to the best dermatologist in Dallas and he had me on Retin-A along with other creams. Here’s the big deal, I started using Senegence products (finally stopped using Retin-A) and my skin is improving daily. Truly an amazing transformation. I love all the skin line for Dry skin and can tell a huge difference adding Nangai Oil, Climate Control & Seneserum C. The oil and many of the ingredients come from Vanuatu Island in the South Seas. This isn’t a pitch, I’m very impressed with this line and the list of healthy ingredients! Thanks for your inspiration!
The best products for my skin cross the line between "product" and…not. A more traditional product for me would be topical probiotics sprayed on my skin nightly. Much of my regimen is oral; collagen hydrolysate and powdered liver make regular appearances. Less traditional and counterintuitive solutions include a chlorine filter in my shower and proper oral hygiene to combat long-simmering infections deep in my jaw.
I live a lower middle class life. I use only 2 things. A Mexican Brand soap called Gris. The sulphur type, because there are different types. And a moisturizing lightener called Dr. Fred Summit. Both, products cost me under $5.00. I am A Hispanic with freckles & in my 40’s started to experience dark blotchy pigment on my face and I would still have break outs after using these 2, I nearly never have that problem.
Modere anti oxidant serum and eye gel. Does wonders for my skin
What a noble product Dr. Bader has developed. How wonderful that he will be helping so many people who need it.
I hear you about how stress ages us. The past year and a half took a toll on my face. I’m sure it took a toll on the inside too, but my hubby is doing much better, is alive when he wasn’t expected to survive an aggressive brain cancer (spread from lung cancer). It was a wild ride. Every day is a gift.
I use Arbonne’s products. Oldest daughter became a consultant. Hubby and I thought she was nuts since she had two little ones and worked full time. I loved the beauty products but the nutrition products really interested me. I had been living under a rock before that. Learned to eat healthy thanks to Arbonne. Now I’m a Master Certified Health Coach. Something I never saw myself doing in my wildest dreams. Life is a kick in the pants!
I’ll turn 62 in March. As far as fashion, I’m the exact opposite of you. At home, I look like a bag lady. Haha! Love being comfortable. I have no fashion sense, but my youngest sister does. She buys clothes all the time and when she gets tired of them, she gives some to me. Good deal!
As far as your philosophy, I feel the same way you do. I started a tap dance class 4 weeks ago and I’m loving it. The women in the class are a hoot. Who says we have to slow down as we age? No way! I’m just getting started on all my new goals!
I found you through the video on BuzzFeed. My idol, Kristen Lamb, shared that video on my Facebook timeline. Very cool that she shared that with me. I can tell you’re a lot of fun.
Love that you’re called the Accidental Icon. How cool is that?
After dealing with an unknown autoimmune disease for the last 15 years (now thought to be lupus) and with skin pain (full body neuropathy)I have limited my skin care to coconut oil as make up remover and warm water to cleanse -believe it or not. It suffices but I’m afraid of new products because of how sensitive the skin is. As for makeup…less is more . I’m 55 and learning to love the new skin I’m in. Thank you for your blog…I modelled as a young woman..but haven’t "seen that woman in a long time". Time to step out and get creative despite the illness.
I don’t know what I love more, the post or the comments. So great to learn from all these amazing women. I’ve been binging on skincare blogs and products looking for the one simple thing. Right now it’s probably a balm cleanser and a French thermal water SPF moisturiser. People like Augustinus Bader are my heroes. As are you. I grew up with this mantra that life sort of stops when you are 35. What a bunch of BS. I will be 40 soon, and look to you for inspiration.
Its really WOW!how i wish i could be U.every angle u’re perfect for me!
HI. Do you know when Dr Baders skin range is coming out. I currently use IMage products but am really beginning to get affeccted by the lines above my lips ..I hate them..I’m 52.
I have used Rose Hip Oil for the last 10 years and love my skin. Cleanse in the shower with Clarins for sensitive skin and then put the oil on my skin while it is still damp. For 51 I do not have a lot of wrinkles even though I had a lot of sun damage in my teens. What you put on your skin gets absorbed into your system so less chemicals the better 🙂
Most important factor in ageless skin is genetics. Both my parents aged beautifully. I am 73 and am told frequently that I look 20 years younger – often by doctors. I do have an autoimmune disorder called Sjogrens which dries ones skin out drastically. I use Elizabeth Arden products because about 50 years ago, my allergist recommended it because it did not contain ingredients which caused allergic reactions. It has worked great for 50 years.
I am 60 years old. Being in the beauty industry, I have tried many different skin care products of many different price ranges. I am currently using Mineral Fusion products. It is moderately priced and paraben free. They have key ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, caffeine, coconut oil, to name a few and products are more on the natural side. I use, Ultimate Moisture cleanser, then I spritz my face with Skin soothing face toner apply limitless beauty cream as a serum then finish up with the Intense Hydration Face Cream.
I just discovered your blog. I immediately sent it to all of my friends who love fashion and skin care and individuality. I love that you’re not stressed about your age. I hate how ageist America is and how it seems younger women have staked claim to everything, including blogging. It’s great to see your site. I really enjoy it.
I don’t use anything that’s been tested on animals.
I have been using Bee Yummy face cream by Live Live, NYC for over ten years. People say I look ten years younger than I am…. it is so simple and lite and smells incredible. It connects me with that part of myself that Loves nature and a simple life. Less is more. Quality not quantity and all that… Your blog makes me feel empowered about getting older. Thank you ooxo Much Love, Freya
I just discovered your blog, pictures. I am impressed with your desire to shatter the norms around aging. I went through a traumatic car accident several years ago that left as paraplegic. Multiple surgeries, some bad doctors, wrong medication I said stop last year and began to reclaim my life. Seeing your blog has been a breath of fresh air. The inspiration that says Yes I can!! Btw I love fashion and skin care.
Yoga makes me feel authentic and natural.
Ok, I just found you from a link my little sister sent me. She loved your schoolgirl fashion recollection. She said you reminded her of a slightly more mature version of me. My high school had to rewrite their handbook, twice, while I attended. They had neglected to specify what shade of the school colors (Yello & green) could be worn. I.e. sweaters, shirts… They had also neglected to be gender specific regarding ties, shoes, trousers, blazers… Lol! The VP adored me & applauded my attention to the details in the uniform guidelines, thus he allowed me to get as creative as I chose to be, within the rules. I’ve always been creative & involved & aimed to be influencial towards positive change, but never an anarchist. I would rather persuade & encourage when resisting the status quo.
Ok, so all that being said, your blog is quickly becoming my beauty Bible. Weather it be fashion, skincare, accessories, hair, and inner beauty.
I worked as an Executive Field Sales Director for the top designers in cosmetics & fragrances & accessories. I’m ADD & sitting in a chair, indoors is torture. So, I dropped out of college immediately after the opening ceremonies. School structure was a prison. I chose to self educate & find my place in the world which led me to seemingly unrelated fields that allowed me to effect change in every company & corporate field I emersed myself in. I worked my Executive career, while simultaneously consulting for a group of Electrical Engineers that needed their product tested by NASA & the largest international (& female led) electrical components manufacturer & supplier. I helped start a private tutorial & instructional service for home educated students grades 1-12. I ran a basket gift service from my basement. I administrated at my church and oversaw building renovations, constructed a financial plan that made their organization, charities, and community centers profitable so their million dollar endowment could grow & self fund dozens of missions indefinitely. I did all if this while educating my children from home through high school. I myself still only have a high school diploma. But I proved myself in the field & it never mattered to my employers or in Board meetings that I held seats in.
During this time, in the cosmetic & fashion industry, I challenged the status quo, wearing fashion I created for my plus size figure. Thrift store fashion, glued on nails for affordable manicures, making my own clipped in hair from discount warehouses (way before Caucasians began wearing fony hair!) I made my own skincare products & makeup kits. I highlighted & contoured way before I heard of it in my field! I figured out how to look like a million bucks while spending $20. As a result, I put 3 through college & am completely debt free. House, cars… All paid for. No debt.
Then, I lost my mom. I began getting mysterious lung infections & migraines in my early thirties. Then pain, everywhere. Arthritis EVERYWHERE. Then later 30’s the fatigue & organ infections began. At 42, I lost my dad & my body began to rule my conduct. Muscle injuries, tissue tears, infections, unrelenting pain, fatigue & finally my brain… It fogged! Anxiety. I had to retire. And it got worse. Rashes that looked like burns, they left scars on my face, my arms, my chest. My skin, my mouth, my lungs, my eyes… Dry!! Joints crippled Head to toe. Blood clot. Double Anemia. Blood tests, specialists, physical therapist, psychologist… And finally a diagnosis; Connective Tissue Disease, Sjogren’s, Fibromyalgia, Lupus. The Sjogren’s is the one that kicks my ass daily & dries me out, it cause the lung infections, the joint pain and this autoimmune disease Never goes into remission. So, now I’m trapped indoors mist if the time. When I have the energy, I run a support group phone chain & coloring club. And I research & give my blood for other researchers. It’s my new normal, and at almost 48, I now accept it. But I educate myself & my specialists by trying things I find online. I read technical medical trials from around the world. I educate my community & there care takers. And I’ve found a way to excel at a snails pace but ever forward.
This is alot to share. But I want to applaud your example to be amazing whatever our age, our health.
I would also like to know if I could get some contact information for Dr. Bader. My Sjogren’s Warriors would greatly appreciate ways to keep their skin healthy & repair the damages this disease has wreaked on our bodies.
As for my favorite product. Geurlain’s Luminous Pearls & YSL’s Touch Eclat. They are an annual investment of $100 but are worth a million! As scared as I am, I finish my face with these & I still stopped and told I’m flawless each & Everytime I go out!
~Lisa aka Cheetah the Wonder Woman
Simple regimes. I love make up but solid skin care is paramount. Washing my face and applying moisturizer every night is my only steadfast rule.
I’m 57 years old, I read all the posts here and, I think it is so comforting to hear all these lovely voices! I am so happy to have found your post and thank you so much! I make all my own skincare products since 2003, I have been very sick with auto-immune issues too many, some friends here have the same issue as I do. I just want to feel better in my skin…wish it could sink into the muscles and bones too! I was told I look 30! Imagine that! I love your style xoxo.
Cindy
I’ve just started using Peter Thomas Roth products and I find them amazing! No need for botox or fillers!! My beautician says retinol so I use that too. I am a 58 year old with pale skin and I have to stay out of the sun which in turn helped my skin I think!!! In the right light I still look ok!!! ; )
I can’t wait to try this new product – it sounds brilliant! In the meantime, I use a very simple and tremendously inexpensive skin routine that was suggested to me by my dermatologist. (Being a 54 year-old redhead with pale, freckled skin, I need to see her on a routine basis.) I use CeraVe, a product one can buy at the grocery store for cleansing and coconut oil for moisturizing. This combo has worked as well as any I have tried, but I would really like to see some results.
Great stories. Like you I have been so disappointed that I stick to cleansing and moisturizing as well. And I never believe any story. But I think I will make an exception for you and Dr. Bader. As I really don’t think you are lying. The investment is huge though. It is nice that ine contributes to the research as well. And my hair dresser cost a fortune too. Hmmm… am I willing to pay € 225 for one 50ml bottle times 2(bottles)? And how long will that last me? Soul searching Lyn ?.
