What is convergence? The simplest meaning is, “the approach of two separate elements towards a common objective.”
When this occurs in life it seems to make things easier and flow naturally. It makes different activities come together as if they were a whole. Somehow a container emerges with convergence that allows all the disparate parts that feel so stressful when thought of separately to come together in a way that is pleasurable and enjoyable. This weekend I had convergence in my personal life. I was able to see my granddaughter, do something nice for my daughter and son-in-law, spend quality time with my daughter, show up for my goddaughter at an important event in her life, have some laughs with my busy sister and do some caregiving for my mother. It was the perfect balance of giving and taking. It made me feel so coherent, accomplished and full.
What I hope to figure out this summer is how to achieve convergence in my professional life. Can the technologies, tools and content from my academic life ever merge with the technology, tools and content of my fashion media content producer life? Do I have to displace the old to do the new? Or is there something entirely new ‘becoming’ that can occur?
What are your thoughts on the questions I am posing?
Just discovered your blog a few days ago and really enjoy it. Interesting example of convergence, a phenomenon I have experienced recently in various ways.
I am wondering what your current profession is…is it in any way related to your obvious love of fashion? I am a retired engineer and have discovered that techniques learned on the job have come in very handy in my current love of creating unusual clothing for myself through with sewing and knitting. I too love Miyake and several unusual German designer and enjoy imitating their "look" in my own clothing. Some examples on my blog http://deconstructaltercreate.blogspot.com
Accidental Icon – I pondered your post and thought of two words to describe your weekend (and personal activities). Synchronicity, the Jungian concept that holds that events are “meaningful coincidences” if they occur with no apparent causal relationship, yet seem meaningfully related. And, serendipity – a “fortunate happenstance” or “pleasant surprise”.
How wonderful it would be if these two words (along with convergence) could be achieved in your professional life as seamlessly as your weekend activities, and I am sure some will. But for those transitions that may be more challenging I found this quote from Friedrich Nietzsche to provide some guidance: But in the loneliest desert happens the second metamorphosis: here the spirit becomes a lion he will seize his freedom and be master in his own wilderness.

You describe a wonderful weekend with family! Your ability to connect, to give and receive and write about it in the most beautiful way is a gift.
I’m looking forward to following your summer of discovery. I know I will be intrigued with the process and outcome.

I think it’s important to see the opportunities the new technologies offer you and how they could help you achieve your goals. They’re coming together now, applications, devices, the speed is so high, you have to choose what’s best for you. And use them at the max. That’s convergence between technology and your creativity. Lovely weekend you had, congrats!

I think everything converges naturally. It’s all about communicating who you are in totality. Whatever your interests or skills , who says you can’t share them in one or throughout several spaces using a personal combination of the technologies.
There is no new, just another way to do things and add texture to it: bring things to a life yet to be explored.
A passage from a book can become a blog post with responses and analysis. One sentence from thet book can become a tweet, the same passage can inspire an image on instagram or a podcast.
A mood stimulated from a poem can be expressed by an image from nature. I think if we dabble with technologies as a way to providing more layers and richness to our experience rather than a replacement that’s taking life to new and higher dimensions.

I’ve been thinking a lot about convergence (and divergence) in my professional life. I have what is known as a ‘portfolio career’ – I’m a part-time academic, freelance journalist and a fashion media content producer, too. It’s a balancing act that’s out of balance…
My optimism is a bottomless pit. I strongly believe that always there is a new "becoming." Yes, you will realize convergence. You will it.

When I was an English Professor, many of my students questioned why I did not go into Fashion as a career. Due to my husband’s career move, I left my teaching appointment and became a CEO and am now blending THAT with my love for fashion and helping women, not only in fashion but in the digital pre-crime alert process our company provides to protect our members from online fraud, scammers, predators, etc. Creating a synergy between what was, what is, and what I am creating in my fashion endeavor often feels lonely and quite challenging. Your question refreshes me. I know that creativity and artistic pursuits must be engaged in everything I do and that includes my role as CEO and all the technological elements involved. Is it easy? No. It requires innovative approaches, lots of think time, and often questions, such as "Am I going about this correctly?" We gravitate toward that which we love, and I truly believe that our intelligence and ingenuity will help us get to where our hearts and minds are fulfilled, so that we may, in turn, love and influence family, friends, and within business relationships. Does that mean we can keep it all in the ring? Maybe. Maybe not. But I am certain, as long as we pursue what truly fills us with joy is where we will ultimately arrive and thrive.
