Here’s my choice for NYFW and the first day of class Read More for outfit details
Since one of the goals of this blog is to invite my readers to be more self-reflective about fashion, I waited until now to write about NYFW.
The first week of September meant I was thinking about what to wear to my “firsts”: NYFW and class. In both arenas my challenge is to engage and inspire a range of people, the majority young. Since I was going to try and run between the classroom and Lincoln Center (about two blocks), outfit choices had to do double duty. Everyone wanted to be in A/W 2014 but in New York it was hot and humid and shows and events are all over town…implicating fabric (cotton) and footwear (flats) choice. I was/am delighted that black and white (and sometimes grey) is in the palette of my favorite designers’ A/W 2014 collections (see my picks on Pinterest).
I ask my readers to ponder this; is it possible for one outfit to meet two completely different sets of expectations? Serve two masters? Work in a conservative world but have enough edge for a creative one? Conform but be independent at the same time? Comments please…

I do believe its possible for one outfit to serve two expectations. I guess corporate or conservative dress share aesthetic similarities and symbolic associations (particularly with the angular cuts) with the avant-garde so I think it is very possible to dress in a way that resonates well in both the conservative and creative worlds.

Emmie, thanks for your thoughtful comment. I liked the way you addressed the tension in the question and your eloquent description of the similarities.
