I have always loved a jumpsuit ever since they first appeared in the fashion scene in the 1970’s. I have owned one in various renditions and for different purposes ever since. Of course I would love them because they are decidedly an in-between, both/and wardrobe item, neither dress nor pants. In the 1980’s I had an olive green, power suit kind of vibe jumpsuit when I was a boss and trying to make my mark in a career. In the 1990’s I had black ones cinched with wide belts for going out on weekends and salsa dancing. A favorite of mechanics, rockers, space travelers, cellmates and high fashionista’s, the jumpsuit is best known for it’s ease and convenience except in one important aspect; going to the bathroom. It adds a bit of complexity when it comes to preforming that function. Despite this one drawback, it has now become what is known as a “wardrobe staple” and even has its own category in the drop-down menu of sites like Net-a-Porter.
There is something about a jumpsuit that gives me a feeling of confidence and allure I never seem to find when wearing a dress. As always my default position on any clothing choice is comfort. I prefer to wear jumpsuits even for formal events and they are especially easy to style up or down. They can be paired with sneakers or heels. Finding the right cut for your body type is key and this has sometimes been challenging for me as a shorter person. However, when you get it right it elongates the body and actually gives me a more sexy feel than when I am wearing a dress. The jumpsuit always references “future” for me and so is an the appropriate choice for the one year anniversary of Accidental Icon. It screams attitude. For some fun commentary and ideas, the Beauty Editor of W Magazine, Jane Larkworthy, did a delicious series on instagram called #30DaysofJumpsuits.

What’s your take on jumpsuits? Do you seeing them become a wardrobe staple for you?
Love your style!
Thanks for letting me know.
I too love a jumpsuit. I remember a gorgeous one I had back in the 70s. A sort of slinky backless snakeskin print. I wear them mostly in the evening. If I have a long day in town I find them a bit tricky for the reason you have stated.
Would love to see that snakeskin print suit!
Happy blog anniversary! I confess when we were in NYC last weekend I dragged my husband’s stepdaughter to Dover Street Market hoping for an Icon sighting. No luck, but we both enjoyed compiling imaginary shopping lists in that breathtaking store.

Thanks for letting me know.
It is a great place even if you don’t buy anything! Let me know the next time you come.

Never owned a jumpsuit – but see the appeal of the all-in-one – might be time to invest in one!
Go for it!

Thank you Lyn! You have given me the courage to wear my Y’s jumpsuit(with "sleeves" that form a belt!) again.I am the same age as you but worried that i am too old to get away with it-it is coming out of the back of my wardrobe tonight!
Absolutely never "too old", would love to see a picture of that jumpsuit.

You look fabulous in your first anniversary jumpsuit. I too have a place in my heart for this "in-between" piece. I have worn jumpsuits throughout the decades, and my current favorite is a black 70’s number with slightly flared pant legs. Off to check out 30 days of jumpsuits!
Let’s find a designer to do that. That is a great idea.

I now have a small selection of jumpsuits, having spent a very long time trying to find ones that fitted and flattered AND were comfortable (the eternal trinity of style necessities). I evidently have a ‘thing’ about jumpsuits in fact, as I seem to remain convinced that THE perfect one is just round the corner in the next vintage shop… However, when I found one earlier this year with long enough legs (I usually cut my losses and go for three quarter length) that also ticked the other boxes, I did have a eureka moment.
You look entirely fabulous here; pretty much the epitome of stylish, especially with the addition of the silk cardigan. What a great outfit to celebrate a year’s worth of blogging.
Sounds like you have quite a collection. I always love to have an item that I am on the hunt for. It makes shopping fun.
I use to wear jumpsuits. I do like them because of the ease with style. One piece that looks like two: how can you beat that?
The reason I stopped wearing them is because the look from the side (on my body shape) isn’t flattering. And I can’t bear wearing those tight elastic undergarments.
Here’s a good business idea: design a jump suit that has more stretch and hangover( on the top, backside or both) for those who have shape issues. Custom fitted jumpsuits.
You look super in this jumpsuit. I like how you have accessorized it with the sheer blouse. This one jump suit could be used from day to formal events.

Lyn,you look wonderful …as usual!
I love your sandals-please post their designer/brand.
I know they were made in Italy. They are old and I can no longer see the name of the brand. Sorry!

I haven’t worn a jumpsuit since the 70’s. You look fabulous in yours!

I thought I could not wear them either because I am short. I just kept trying on different styles until I found what worked for me. It is about confidence.

You look fab. I love jump suits too but the bathroom thing is a bit of a problem ….perhaps a redesign like a zipper crotch
Dorrie
LOL I bet you look great in a jumpsuit.

I love them too, but I am still trying to find one that suits my small hips and no bum. As the emphasis is rather on that part of your body.
