Ever since coming to the conclusion that I needed a reset, I have been finding myself encountering words that begin with the prefix “re”. Whether it is to re(flect), re(generate), re(cycle), re(calibrate), re(nourish), re(plenish) or re(new) they all seem to suggest that sometimes we need to go back in order to move forward. Sometimes we might need a re(fill) if something has been depleted. “Re” words also seem to imply that sometimes one needs to repeat something again and again in order to learn or for something new to become a habit. My goal for the month of the prefix “re” is to instill the habits of taking good healthy care.
As I re(flected) during my reset time, I realized I need a little more structure and direction in where I am headed in all my activities. Waking up on a Monday and having to pump out a post and hope that we had time the weekend before to take photos was not always conducive to my stress level as well creating optimal conditions for creativity. So moving forward I will be having a monthly theme that will organize my writing, my photos, my newfound video obsession and my bibliographies. This will allow me to plan ahead but still allow for spontaneity within a kind of container. I actually am most creative when I am boxed in to a certain degree. This approach offers a backward kind of creative challenge to the way I have been working.
So for the rest of January the focus will be on “re” words as they apply to taking care of diet, health, nutrition, exercise, hair, skin and stress management. Along with some different kinds of features I will be having (and wearing) a fashion and styling focus on re(cycling).
I will be sharing with you my finished Re;Code garment (it is gorgeous) and the whole process that went into making it, my decision-making process as I go through my clothes to decide which to re(cycle) and which to keep as well as a little re(cyling) project I have been doing with men’s shirts. After going through the mountains of boxes of products that have been generously gifted to me I will share the ones that I actually use and tell you why I do or maybe just share some philosophical musings that they might inspire.
I wish you the happiest of New Years and thank you again for the inspiration you provide through your thoughtful comments.
What is your “re” word for January?
Re- nourish is the word that "speaks" to me. 2017 was a turbulent year for me and my family and I allowed myself to get lost in the difficulties, neglecting myself and my husband physically and mentally .This year I am determined to nourish us both better and your posts express what I am feeling so beautifully, thank you. I also find that restriction encourages my creativity so will be following and accompanying you on that journey.Happy New Year Lyn!
Calvin and I are having a staycation week this week. Just being able to live life at a leisurely pace together has been immensely satisfying.
Thank you. I have to think about my " re" . It is really good direction! Thanks again! Have a Happy NewYear everyone!
Re-start as in "do-over." When life is unkind and deprives you of things you were looking forward to, it’s time for a restart or do-over. And, repair! I have a money pit of an old home, so repair is always on my "To Do" list!
Always we have this ability, another word for it is re(silience).
REi (Kawakubo) as inspiration… REvolution + REbel REbel..
You know you have me on both counts there!
A great a very creative idea! Re-united was the first word coming up in my mind when I read your message.
And I think my favorite ‘Re’-word!
Lookin’ forward to your posts dear!
Ah yes we can all be the authors of our own life!
Thank you for your comment! I watched Instagram then swipe the screen, caz there is the day which is my birthday, I felt something. I read your comment. I’m thinking about ‘Re’ of myself! It’s ‘Re start’! I strongly realized it. I do my best and enjoy my life!
REmunerate:
1. to pay, recompense, or reward for work, trouble, etc.
2. to yield a recompense for (work, services, etc.).
YES!!! YES!!! YES!!!
Those are very important words for me to hear. I need to generate income as this is sooo much work so I can cut back on teaching. Thank you.
The first word that came to mind was RESTORE. As much as I love the holidays, they can be very depleting, energy-wise, and often come with a lot of pressure, socializing (lovely but enervating for an introvert), etc.. I know a lot of people like to enter the new year raring to change all sorts of things, but I’d rather take some time to rest and be a bit gentle with myself. Focus on sleep, warm nourishment, and plenty of time for relaxation. I suppose re-charge and re-flect also figure into this, but the ultimate goal is to come out of January at full strength.
Right with you on that goal!
Renew…
My mother passed in January of 2012, which means this past holiday season was the 5th year without her…and I felt it too. I was so down in the dumps I just didn’t know what to do. Work didn’t help either, since it is the busiest time of the year and I was the only admin in the office and trying to keep up with 9 managers was a bit too much for my psyche, much less my physical being. With that being said, I am taking the month of January to renew myself: my well being, my life, my love of photography and martial arts…and most importantly, my surroundings. I bought a home in 2015 and keep saying what I am going to do…well, this year I am GOING to do it. Renew my lair (hahaha), myself, my passions…my life. Renew, I like that.
So glad to read this! Im going to try again to clear out my Mothers home after losing her six years ago. Lonely time and your words help…thanks
Perhaps you will re(find) some memories there that may change your life. We are on the “re” journey together.
Thoughtful, honest and thank you for sharing. Thank you also for a fantastic new phrase that you will see becomes part of my vocabulary “renew my lair”
Resolve is my re word for the new year.
Happy new year.
My “re” word for January is regroup. This month I turn 65 (years young) and there are so many ideas in my head as to what I would like to do and achieve and, a number of places I would like to revisit (oh 2 “re’s”) and new skills to learn.
As you can see many hopes and dreams so to regroup, get all in perspective and a plan that is healthy for me is my hope. ?
I hit that milestone too this year. It is indeed a good time to re(group)
Can I say reimagine? I’m liking that word, and I am so with you on so many of your ideas/feelings. I like a kind of box as well. And I can’t wait to see where you go with all of this.
I have been watching your journey too. Your photography is wonderful and the details of city life you capture are so unique.
Well, thinking of my new obsession with collagen, I will ad re(generate).
I am trying a new skin care product that is all natural developed by a scientist who specializes in re(generation). Let’s see how it does.
Re committ to being a better version of myself in 2018
Hi!
I have been teaching English for 15 years, I have felt stagnated for the last few years, like in a rut.
So, I quit 2 teaching hours at the end of last semestre in order to spend time REinventing myself……:-)
Happy 2018!
Wonderful, I hope to follow in your footsteps this year.
My re word (not just for January ) is re-wirement (as opposed to retirement )
That is genius!
Repurpose (:
J
Redirection to requalify. I made a very specific job change toward the end of the year and I am experiencing quite a bit of the impostor syndrome … lots of breathing and calming needing to get over nervousness and get back into the sunshine I am (re-?)imagining.
Believe me so many of the things I now do as Accidental Icon required getting a deep breathing app for my phone! Always not comfy when we push ourselves to evolve. Very honest, thank you.
Retake – As in Retake Style my revived blog about wearing second hand clothing. I am typically a lurker not a commenter but this post was irresistible. Hope you don’t mind. I enjoy all your posts!
Your blog is fabulous. I think my readers might enjoy so here it is https://retakestyle.com/author/retakestyle/
Thank you! That was a delightful surprise.
I re-gift my self to myself. Time (Past time? Who’s to say?) to become the me I could be, can be, will be, while the clock’s still ticking.
Live by those words myself!
re-store, re-new and re-connect with friends ! Ruth, London
Renew, reinvent and reinspire!
Re-think, Re-evaluate and Re-store faith in my intuition. Re-assure myself, as Napoleon Hill stated, if I can conceive it and believe it, it can happen.
Would you do a re-make on the story of the color black in your life, especially now that you’ve experienced these styling opportunities?
A great idea! Thanks.
Realigning myself to my true values is going to be my focus for 2018.
In a world that is moving so fast I find it easy to get lost at times. Always having your values as a anchor pulls us home when we drift.
Wonderful plan. Cant wait to savor every post. I live isolated in mountains with little society exposure. I wish you would share what pants, booties and footwear you are wearing in this post so I can look online for such. I love the look.
I am wearing Ply cashmere sweater and pencil skirt, wool tights and sock boots are Céline.
Funny that "resolution" is a "re" word, but I like all the words proposed here so much better. Some more: January can be such an enervating month. Instead, I plan to use the coming weeks to reinvigorate my creative muscles, and reconnect with friends and family.
That is what I hope to do with our community here, connection.
Reroute is my word; to find a new way on my journey. I want to be going in the right direction.
Sometimes “getting lost” gets us somewhere we never thought we could go. Knowing a direction yet sometimes wandering off path to see a different view is how I am approaching the monthly themes.
Respect = re + spect = to look at again.
That’s ultimately what respect is: a deep seeing.
Well said!
re-invent, as I leave one decade, I am longing for a better and re-inspired version of myself
Re(joice). I re(cently) re(alized) that I’m not having enough fun these days, and decided that needed to change.
re-embrace….one’s self. 😉
Re-think how I perceive myself at 72…not as others see me but as I see myself..inside and out..love this blog…
Re(play) the joyful days of childhood, with my favorite toy…fashion that truly expresses the real, ever changing me!
Re-move myself from toxic people. I have Re-moved some very toxic people from my personal space, my facebook and my family. When you Re-move those toxic things from your life, you truly find a sense of peace. You finally realize that you have less drama in your life, and most of all you finally realized that those toxic people carried so much jealousy towards you. The Re-move in my life has helped me push past those that tried to hold me back, those that kept whispering in my ear " you can’t do it, and Girl that look a mess on you" I’ve learned that there are people in your life for a season, reason and lifetime, and I also learned that most will not be able to handle the elevations in your life, and they will have to be Re-moved. I also learned that those that are there for a lifetime will be there, even if they disappear for a brief period in your life. so Re-Moved is my RE….
RE-RE start. RE- empezar. I ‘m starting again, retaking my dreams that I’ve left in the past.
Re-tire
